The almighty Heaphy track is a great multi day ride. A must do for any cross-country mountain biker.
Fun biking on the high Denniston plateau. If you like rocky 4wd tracks then you’ll be in heaven.
Fun cross country route on 4wd tracks. The breath taking scenery more than makes up for the lack of technical features.
An easy, interesting ride dotted bits of history and a very long dark tunnel.
This ride starts from the Karangahake gorge walkway car park. At the parking there is loads of information about the industrial past of the gorge which is pretty interesting.
The ride starts by crossing the bridge then climbing up, relatively steeply, for a short distance. You then cross another bridge over the river and the road to enter an old railway tunnel. This tunnel is long and dark, proper lights are useful.
From the exit of the tunnel its a pleasant, flat ride along the river, unfortunately with the road just the other side. The track crosses one minor road on the way to the next foot bridge opposite a nice warm pub and the end of the ride. Just beyond the bridge are some ruins and in summer a small steam train attraction.
The gold standard of trail networks has to be Rotorua. With 60+kms of singletrack there is something for everyone.
Excellent network of trails with big features and fast flowing tracks.
We only had about an hour to play here before dark and an impending storm. But what we did was really, really fun and I assume the rest of the track network is just as good.
